Take a journey back in time at the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum as you gaze upon the largest single collection of seventeenth century maritime and shipwreck antiquities in the Western Hemisphere. Stare in astonishment at the booty the Learning Channel declared \"the #1 Amazing Treasure in the world.\" Incredible jewelry, doubloons, solid gold and silver bars, cannons, and historic weapons from Spain\'s golden galleons, the Atocha and the Margarita fill the museum\'s exhibits whose ever evolving galleries feature new recoveries. See the jaw dropping six inch gold cross that was designed with the finest emeralds in the known world.
The museum houses priceless artifacts and other historical objects and pieces recovered from 15th to 18th century New World shipwrecks. Marvel at artifacts that have been buried at sea for centuries. The Henrietta Marie, a 1700 English merchant slave ship, the only tangible evidence of the transatlantic slave trade, is on view on the museum\'s second floor.
We were accredited by the American Association of museums in 2003, a distinction only 5% of all American Museums can boast. Our museum was established in 1982 as a not-for-profit foundation and as such we must continually find ways to produce the funds to care for these objects while progressing with educational opportunities to benefit people of all ages. We operate a 2000 square foot conservation laboratory that specializes in conserving underwater archaeological artifacts. This means all the artifacts that are either recovered from archaeological expeditions or are donated are conserved on premise.
The museum also produces and hosts rotating exhibitions that explore different aspects of the New World\'s rich maritime heritage. Interactive modules as well as audio and video components add to the allure. Anyone whom enjoys tales of pirates and buried treasures will appreciate this \"jewel\" of a museum. |
